In December I’m venturing out on my first backpacking trip through Europe for two weeks. A friend and I will be arriving in Zurich, spending a day or two in Basel with some friends and then off to Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, Vienna and then Rome or Paris (haven’t decided, and plans are always subject to change), especially with such a short amount of time.
We want to spend as little money as possible, we’re bringing over about $500 for each of us. We plan on really scrimping and saving, living off of cheap anything from grocery stores and such. We’re just bringing our bikes and a backpack each.
1. Any tips for backpackers in the winter?
2. Bikers in the winter?
3. We don’t want a Eurail pass, so how much are individual train fairs in any of the cities? (This question mostly pertains to citizens of the area, I think they might know best.)
I know a few people in each city that we might possibly stay with, to avoid spending money on hostels, but again, plans are always subject to change…
I was wondering if anyone here might either be in one of these cities from December 27th – January 12th that would either let my friend and I sleep on a couch or know someone who welcomes travelers? Also, just showing us around the city would be amazing.
Any information or couches to sleep on would be greatly appreciated!
