Trip from the U.S. to Spain and Italy

I am completely clueless about European travel, so please be kind!

My husband and I would like to take a trip from the U.S. to Spain and Italy. We have never ever been to either country, and have ZERO clue where to begin/end.

We have two weeks.

What would you recommend for an itinerary, and what would be the best and cheapest way to travel and locations at which to stay? We are on a limited budget. My only must-see is Rome. We considered taking a Mediterranean cruise, but the prices are outrageous.

I have a friend from England who suggests flying into Madrid from the States, catch a train to Valencia and work my way up the coast to Barcelona.

From Barcelona, fly to Rome. From Rome, head to Venice and Florence and fly home from Florence.

That already sounds overwhelming, and I have nothing to go on, but to take his word for it. We considered a travel agent, but so many people say we can plan this on our own without using a travel agent.

*Any* suggestions are totally welcome. Suggestions for airline travel, train travel, car travel, bus travel, cheap places to stay, cheap places to eat…whatever you can provide would be appreciated.

Please help! Thank you so much.
