Hi guys! In a few days I’m heading to Austria (a little south of Salzburg) for a family reunion, and I’m going with my dad and my boyfriend. My boyfriend and I would really like to visit Hungary, having never had the chance to go to Eastern Europe.
While we were both champs in Western Europe, we know nothing of the east. Our biggest concern was getting from Salzburg/Munich (or even Vienna, if needed) to Budapest, our ideal destination. Are there nonstop trains from any of the departing cities? Buses? Would it be much easier to rent a car?
Thank you!
There are several direct trains from Salzburg to Budapest with a journey time around 6 hours.
11:00 16:49 RailJet
15:00 20:49 RailJet
02:18 08:54 EuroNight
03:16 10:19 EuroNight
04:36 11:34 EuroNight
Departing from Vienna would hugely increase travel possibilities, especially with day trains. RailJet trains and Eurocity trains connect both capitals every two hours. A change of trains in Vienna could be a solution if none of the direct trains from Salzburg fit your needs. Check bahn.de for full train times.
orangeways.com bus lines is my favorite bus lines from Budapest. It goes from Vienna to bp as well. there is also eurolines. i’ve taken the train from bp to Vienna and back again, and it’s an easy 3 hours-ish. orangeways, i think, also takes the same amount of time.
Budapest is so amazing. you will love it. :)
