Germany, Austria, ???

Hi folks.  I spent a month in Europe two years ago & I want to go back for another month.  I am studying German so I’d really like to have a German language inspired sort of trip.  I was considering Berlin (never been) & Salzburg (visited for a few days).  I was thinking of visiting a few places & staying put for longer rather than what we did before (new city every few days).  I was thinking Switzerland also, but some one told me I would never be able to understand their German.  Any thoughts on this or alternate German speaking countries/areas?  Also would flying or train trips be the best way to go between each city?  We used Eurail on our first visit & that just seems more appropriate when you’re doing a lot of moving around.  Input is appreciated.  Thanks!

(Can I get a tag for transportation?)
