Cell Phone Solution

What are the best options out there regarding cell phone use?  I had planned to bring my iPhone with me, then I recently read horror stories of people who used it while traveling in Europe and came home to a $3000 phone bill.  (I guess “unlimited” data isn’t really unlimited, etc. etc.)

Is it practical to rent a cell phone there?  More practical to use phone cards (do they even have pay phones anymore?)
